Selecting a Catnic Lintel

...What you need to know

 

Step 1: Wall Construction

What is the wall construction?

  • Cavity Wall
  • Timber Frame
  • External solid wall
  • Internal partition or load bearing wall

Step 2: Structural opening

How wide is the structural opening?

  1. Measure the size of the structural opening i.e. the open space between the walls where the door/window frame is fitted
  2. Add 150mm minimum to each end

Step 3: Load on Lintel

What load is to be supported by the lintel?

Types of load include:

  • Roof trusses
  • Floor joists
  • Masonry
  • Combination of the above

Step 4: Select your Lintel

Once you have:

  1. Wall construction
  2. Outer leaf e.g. 102mm
  3. Cavity e.g. 60mm
  4. Inner leaf e.g. 100mm
  5. Lintel length e.g. 2100mm
  6. Load e.g. 15kN
